During the three years of war, 355 Ukrainian civilians were killed due to russian explosive devices, including 18 children. This is announced in a statement by the Ministry of Defense, Ukrainian News Agency reports.
"Since the beginning of the large-scale invasion of the russian federation, 811 incidents with the civilian population due to explosive remnants of war have been recorded. 1,158 civilians were injured, 335 of whom were killed. Among the killed were 18 children," the statement says.
The Ministry of Defense notes that threats from explosive devices affect the lives of more than 6 million Ukrainians, especially in the de-occupied territories of Ukraine.
Head of the Mine Action Department - Deputy Head of the Main Department of Mine Action, Civil Protection and Environmental Safety of the Ministry of Defense Oleh Shuvarskyi noted that in many cases the russians lay mines unsystematically, in particular in agricultural fields, in residential areas and on public roads, 75% of incidents are with mines.
The Kharkiv, Mykolaiv and Kherson Regions remain the most contaminated, where more than 50% of all incidents occurred in total.
"A particular danger both when clearing the de-occupied territories from explosive devices and when carrying out humanitarian demining activities is posed by cluster munitions, due to incidents related to their detonation. The use of such munitions by the russians blocks the implementation of restoration work in these territories, the restoration of transport infrastructure, heat, gas and water supply, power lines and other facilities that are necessary for the life of the de-occupied regions," Shuvarskyi noted.
According to him, the low quality of the production of engineering munitions and their long storage time lead to disruption of the self-destruction mechanisms of some types of these munitions, such munitions are unpredictable and extremely dangerous.
Shuvarskyi added that a large number of modern mines are manufactured in a plastic case and have a low content of metal elements, which significantly complicates their search, especially with the use of mine detectors.
Shuvarskyi reported that since the beginning of the full-scale aggression, the demining units of the Security and Defense Forces have detected and destroyed almost 920,000 explosive devices.
As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, the State Emergency Service stated that Ukraine currently remains the most mined country in the world, the area of potentially contaminated territories with explosive devices is about 139,000 square kilometers.
The Ministry of Defense is working on the possibility of creating a testing ground for testing new technologies used in demining processes, in particular with the involvement of artificial intelligence.
