The administration of US President Donald Trump is developing new plans to put pressure on Ukraine and the aggressor country russia, as the White House increasingly realizes that it will not be able to conclude a peace agreement in the coming months.
Reuters reported this, citing its own sources.
The unnamed interlocutors of the agency said that none of the current agreements look imminent. This increases the likelihood that russia's three-year war against Ukraine will drag on, and Kyiv will need to provide additional support to conduct hostilities.
Such an outcome would be undesirable for Trump, who, as he himself believes, makes deals and has repeatedly promised to end the war quickly.
According to Reuters, senior US officials have been privately complaining for several weeks about the way Kyiv is conducting negotiations. But in recent days, sources say, officials have become increasingly frustrated with moscow.
In a series of meetings and calls over the weekend, officials at the White House and the US State Department acknowledged that russian dictator vladimir putin is actively resisting Washington's efforts to broker a solid peace deal.
They also discussed what economic or diplomatic sanctions might push Russia to sign a deal, if any.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, on April 1, russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Sergei Ryabkov said moscow could not accept US proposals to end the war in Ukraine.
Also, Senior White House correspondent and Fox News host Jacqui Heinrich reported, citing her own sources, that the White House is considering aggressive sanctions against russia because putin is “slow-rolling comprehensive ceasefire talks.”
