US plans tough sanctions against russia: details

American lawmakers propose to increase sanctions pressure on russia, in particular by introducing a 500% tariff on goods from countries that continue to buy russian oil and gas.

According to The Washington Times, Senators Lindsey Graham (Republican Party) and Richard Blumenthal (Democratic Party) have introduced a bill aimed at strengthening sanctions against the kremlin due to russia's unwillingness to achieve lasting peace with Ukraine.

The document has the support of both political camps: among its 50 co-authors, an equal number of Republicans and Democrats.

"The dominating view in the United States Senate is that Russia is the aggressor, and that this horrific war and Putin’s aggression must end now and be deterred in the future," the senators said in a joint statement.

The proposed bill provides for both primary and secondary sanctions that will affect not only russia, but also individuals and states that contribute to its aggression against Ukraine. The sanctions will come into effect if peace talks fail or if russia violates the agreements reached.

In particular, one of the key initiatives is the introduction of a 500% tariff on imported goods from countries that purchase russian oil, gas, uranium and other resources.

Such restrictions could create additional guarantees for President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who emphasizes the need to fix mechanisms for protection against a new russian invasion in a potential peace agreement.

In the text of the bill, the authors express the hope that the administration of US President Donald Trump in 2025 "will achieve what has eluded the world in the past: ending Russian aggression against Ukraine permanently and ensuring the survivability of a free and democratic Ukraine."

"These sanctions against Russia are at the ready and will receive overwhelming bipartisan, bicameral support if presented to the Senate and House for a vote," the initiators of the document said.

Regarding peace talks, the Trump administration seeks to bring Kyiv and moscow to the negotiating table to sign an agreement to end the war. At the same time, the kremlin has rejected Washington's latest proposals for a 30-day ceasefire, which Kyiv supported. Instead, the russian side has put forward its own conditions, which, according to the Ukrainian authorities, are tantamount to capitulation.

As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, on April 1, a representative of the russian Foreign Ministry, Sergei Ryabkov, stated that moscow cannot accept US proposals to end the war against Ukraine.

Senior White House correspondent and Fox News host Jacqui Heinrich also reported, citing her own sources, that the White House is considering imposing aggressive sanctions against russia because putin is “slow-rolling comprehensive ceasefire talks.”

Meanwhile, the United States realized that it would not be possible to end the war in the coming months.
