British intelligence analyzes consequences of Ukrainian military strike on ammunition depot at russian Engels-2 air base

British intelligence has called the strike on an ammunition depot located at the russian Engels-2 strategic aviation air base on the night of March 20 the most successful attack on a russian ammunition depot in 2025.

The Ministry of Defence of the United Kingdom has reported this on X.

Thus, Engels-2 is a military base that is widely used for conducting strike operations approximately 600 km from the border with Ukraine. The territory that was hit almost certainly stored a number of aviation munitions that were used against Ukraine, which caused significant damage to it.

"The substantial loss will likely disrupt strike operations from the airfield in the short term, forcing Russia to improve its defensive posture and replenish munitions stocks," the report said.

In addition, russian aircraft were also likely dispersed to surrounding airfields, which has become standard practice in response to Ukrainian deep-strike operations.

"This strike is Ukraine's most successful targeting of a Russian munitions depot in 2025 so far and continues the pattern of regular Ukrainian UAS strikes deep into Russian territory. It also highlights the continuing struggles that stretched Russian air defences face in protecting its strategic military locations," the intelligence agency concluded.

As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, units of the Special Operations Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the Security Service of Ukraine, in cooperation with other components of the Defense Forces, on the night of March 20, struck the Engels airfield in the Saratov Oblast of the aggressor country, russia.
