Zelenskyy appoints Hnatov as Chief of AFU General Staff to replace Barhylevych

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy appointed Andrii Hnatov as Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

The corresponding decree No. 170/2025 was published on the website of the head of state on Sunday, March 16.

"To appoint Andrii Viktorovych HNATOV as Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine," the document says.

By decree No. 169/2025, Zelenskyy dismissed Major General Anatolii Barhylevych from the post of Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that Hnatov was tasked with increasing the efficiency of the management vertical of the Armed Forces, in particular regarding the implementation of the corps structure, efficiency in making and implementing decisions of the Supreme Commander-in-Chief's Staff, as well as implementing combat experience in planning and managing troops. At the same time, Anatolii Barhylevych will continue his service as the Inspector General of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine.

Recall that Andrii Hnatov led the 36th Marine Brigade from 2018 to 2021. In 2022, he was the deputy commander of the troops of the South Operational Command, one of the leaders of the defense of Mykolaiv and the liberation of the Kherson Region, and in the spring of 2023 he commanded the defense of Bakhmut.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, on June 26, 2024, in the Donetsk Region, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy introduced the new commander of the Joint Forces Andrii Hnatov.

On February 26, Zelenskyy dismissed Hnatov from the post of Commander of the Joint Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

On February 27, Defense Minister Rustem Umerov appointed the former Commander of the Joint Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Andrii Hnatov as Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
