23% of Ukraine's territory remains mined - Shmyhal

139,000 sq. km or 23% of Ukraine's territory remains potentially mined.

Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal announced this on the Telegram channel, Ukrainian News Agency reports.

"The Government's strategic goal is to clear Ukraine of mine debris as quickly as possible. 139,000 sq. km (or 23%) of Ukraine's territory remains potentially mined. 84 certified operators are working on demining. 225 demining machines are involved. Part of this equipment is manufactured in Ukraine. We continue to build capacity in this direction," he said.

Also, according to him, more than UAH 529 million in compensation has already been paid to farmers for the services of private demining operators.

"Work on this program continues and almost 360 applications from farmers have already been received. The state budget for the current year has allocated UAH 3 billion for this purpose," he noted.

Shmyhal thanked the partners in the demining coalition, primarily the USA, Switzerland, the EU, Japan, Norway, Germany, Canada, the Netherlands, Sweden, in total about fifty countries.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, in April 2023, the Minister of Internal Affairs Ihor Klymenko stated that about 30% of the territory in Ukraine is contaminated with enemy mines and unexploded ordnance, and it will take more than 10 years to demine agricultural land.
