Trump calls US-Canada border treaty invalid, wants to review it - NYT

US President Donald Trump said in a conversation with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau that he does not consider the 1908 Canada-US border treaty to be valid.

The New York Times (NYT) reported this, citing its own sources.

According to the publication's sources, Trump and Trudeau had a series of phone calls in February, during which they discussed how to prevent Washington from imposing tariffs on Canadian goods.

Trump outlined a long list of complaints about trade relations between the two countries. He spoke about Canada's protected dairy sector and the difficulties American banks face in doing business in Canada. Trump also raised the topic of Canadian consumption taxes, which make goods from the United States more expensive.

NYT sources added that Trump "touched on something more fundamental" during his phone call with Trudeau.

He told the Canadian Prime Minister that he did not consider the treaty that defines the border between the US and Canada to be valid. The American President wants to review it.

The border treaty was concluded in 1908 and definitively defined the international border between the US and Canada, which was a British dominion at the time.

Trump also mentioned reviewing the issue of the joint use of lakes and rivers between the US and Canada.

According to the publication's interlocutors, Trump's statements were taken seriously in Ottawa, not least because he had already publicly stated his desire to annex Canada to the US.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, Trump's decree imposing 25% tariffs on Canadian goods came into effect on March 4. The US President imposed tariffs on imports from Canada and Mexico, as narcotics are transited through these countries to the US.

As a reminder, against this backdrop, the Premier of the Canadian province of Ontario, Douglas Ford, threatened to cut off electricity supplies to the US border states. He also called on other regions of Canada to do the same.
