China reacts to Trump's tariff hike on Chinese goods

After US President Donald Trump doubled tariffs on Chinese goods, China vowed to take retaliatory measures. China's Ministry of Commerce said that Washington's new import tariffs, which came into effect today, violate World Trade Organization rules, Reuters writes.

"China has repeatedly stated that the US's unilateral tariffs violate World Trade Organization rules and undermine the multilateral trading system. Such measures will not solve the problems (of the US - ed.), but will instead harm Sino-US economic and trade cooperation and disrupt regular international trade," the ministry said in a statement.

China calls on the US to "immediately cancel" these tariffs, calling them "unreasonable, which harm each other."

The 20% tariff (previously 10%) came into effect today. The White House claims that this is a response to China's inaction on drug flows, including fentanyl. However, China rejects these accusations, believing that the Trump administration is trying to "shift the blame" and "intimidate" Beijing.

In response to the US actions, according to the Global Times newspaper, China plans to introduce "a series of tariff and non-tariff measures" against American agricultural and food products.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, on February 27, Donald Trump wrote on the social network Truth Social that he was going to impose tariffs on goods from Canada, Mexico and China.

According to him, the reason for the imposition of tariffs was drugs. They are produced in China and enter the US through Canada and Mexico.

Later, Trump decided to double the tariffs on imports from China planned for April 2025. A few days ago, the American leader promised that their size would be 10%, but the day before he decided to increase them to 20%.
