British Prime Minister Keir Starmer asked US President Donald Trump for a backup plan for a possible peacekeeping mission, the sending of which to Ukraine is currently being discussed in Europe.
This was reported by Politico with reference to its own sources.
Yesterday, February 27, Starmer arrived in Washington on a visit to meet with Trump. Sitting in the Oval Office of the White House in the presence of journalists, the American leader stated that British troops would not need US help.
Journalists asked Trump whether the US was ready to come to the aid of British troops if they were deployed in Ukraine.
"If they need help, I will always be with the British, okay? But they do not need help <...> The British have incredible soldiers, incredible military, and they can take care of themselves," Trump said.
According to Politico, shortly before this, during a closed-door meeting, Starmer asked Trump for a "backup plan" from the United States.
This concerns security guarantees for European troops that may be deployed on the territory of Ukraine, in case the aggressor country decides to attack again.
Starmer did not ask Trump to send American soldiers to Ukraine, but expressed hope that the peacekeepers would receive support and aerial reconnaissance from the United States, as well as, in extreme cases, aviation.
Recall that during the meeting between Trump and Starmer, the American leader stated that the agreement on rare earth minerals would become a bulwark for Ukraine and supposedly protect it from a repeated russian attack.
As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, on February 27, Bloomberg reported, citing sources, that Turkey is ready to send its troops to Ukraine to participate in a possible peacekeeping mission.
We also wrote that on February 26, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy named eight European countries that are "positively" looking at sending peacekeepers to Ukraine.
