Extinguishing of arch at Chornobyl NPP after russian drone strike has not yet been completed - Environmental Ministry

Work on extinguishing the protective arch at the Chornobyl nuclear power plant after the Shahed strike continues.

This was reported on Friday, February 28, by the Minister of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources of Ukraine Svitlana Hrynchuk.

"In fact, we have not yet completed the extinguishing work. We are continuing. This does not mean that the fire is constantly going on, but we are constantly monitoring the situation with our colleagues from the State Emergency Service, precisely on the outer skin of the arch of the new safe confinement, because even over the past few days we have found smoldering centers on the northern side of the arch," she said on the air of the only telethon.

As Hrinchuk explained, each time such centers are detected, the upper skin has to be removed, the smoldering center extinguished, and the perimeter further inspected.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, on the night of February 14, a russian strike drone with a high-explosive warhead hit the shelter covering the destroyed power unit No. 4 at the Chornobyl nuclear power plant.

As a result of the strike on the New Safe Confinement (NSC), the integrity of the outer shell of the NSC and equipment in the crane maintenance garage were damaged.

Meanwhile, the Cabinet of Ministers has allocated UAH 1.5 billion to maintain the shelter at the Chornobyl nuclear power plant in a safe condition.
