President Volodymyr Zelenskyy believes that talks about elections in Ukraine before the end of the war are dangerous.
Zelenskyy stated this at a press conference, Ukrainian News Agency reports.
He noted that the issue of elections in Ukraine was first raised by the aggressor country of russia, and now it has also begun to be raised in the United States.
"The issue of elections began to be raised today in the US and there was no secret about it. But it was not and the partners never raised it. This is such a wave. I believe that it is serious and it is part of dangerous steps for perhaps one or another format of pressure on Ukraine and the preparation of relevant documents that suited someone, but not us. Therefore, we need, as they say, to hold our ground and be strong and fight for our independence... I believe that this is a dangerous wave and therefore I am sharply, maybe even unnecessarily, well, I don't know, let's see in the future, I am sharply reacting to this and stopping these waves as best I can, not alone, not only alone," he said.
Zelenskyy stressed that holding elections during the war outside Ukrainian legislation is dangerous.
"In addition to the fact that all this is outside Ukrainian legislation, outside constitutional stories and so on, but what is important is security. How will the military vote - there is no way. How can you vote normally - 267 drones arrived today... What will people do abroad? How to prepare the infrastructure? Where are the observers? Will they come to the front?... Or we must decide: here is such a mileage from the fighting... This is not right. How can you recognize elections in which half of the population will not vote? And what to do with the temporarily occupied territories?... There are a lot of such questions," he noted.
He also added that abolishing martial law before ensuring sustainable peace is dangerous for the country's independence.
"Let's lift martial law. Especially since we say that there are clear challenges, there are few rotations. Well, if we lift martial law, let's be honest, many people will return home. In which country will they vote? With which flag, if the entire army goes back, or the majority," the President said.
Zelenskyy repeated that he believes that US President Donald Trump is being misinformed, he does not believe that Trump himself believes that elections should be held in Ukraine.
As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, Zelenskyy said that he was ready to exchange his position for Ukraine's accession to NATO.
On February 19, Trump said that elections should be held in Ukraine, since Zelenskyy allegedly has a very low level of support among citizens. He called Zelenskyy "a dictator without elections."
