Europe fears US may withdraw from group of countries working on putin tribunal – media

European countries fear that the United States may withdraw from the international program to prosecute the aggressor country russia for war crimes against Ukraine.

The Telegraph reported this, citing several unnamed officials.

The publication notes that the day before, the U.S. refused to call russia an "aggressor" at a meeting of the main group of countries preparing a tribunal for russian dictator vladimir putin.

Washington also refuses to become one of the authors of a UN statement supporting the territorial integrity of Ukraine and demanding that moscow withdraw its troops.

The Trump administration also refused to sign a communiqué of the G7 countries. It is scheduled for February 24, 2025 – the third anniversary of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The document calls russia an "aggressor".

The publication's interlocutors said that Washington's position has called into question the preparations for the final meeting of the main group of countries working on the tribunal for putin.

This group leads a coalition of 40 countries that intends to create a special tribunal for crimes against Ukraine modeled on the reaction to German war crimes after World War II.

"This is quite a drastic shift. Rewriting history and pretending that Russia wasn’t the one who started this war is something that we simply cannot and will not agree to," said one of the publication's interlocutors.

It is emphasized that the United States has not yet left the group of countries working on the tribunal. It is expected that the country will take part in the next meeting of the group in France.

The Telegraph writes that negotiations are currently underway in European capitals about the possible collapse of the group working on the tribunal for putin if the United States does leave.

As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, the Defense Intelligence of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine announced on February 21 that the kremlin had instructed special services and propagandists to prepare to declare "victory" over Ukraine on the third anniversary of the full-scale invasion.
