Russia ready to give USD 300 billion in frozen assets for Ukraine reconstruction with condition for occupied territories, - media

Russia may agree to give its frozen assets in Europe for USD 300 billion for Ukraine reconstruction in order to conclude an agreement with it, but will demand that the money also go to the reconstruction of the territories occupied by russians.

This is reported by Reuters, citing three sources.

After russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the United States and its allies banned financial transactions with the Central Bank of the russian federation and the Ministry of Finance, blocking USD 300-350 billion in russian assets.

Most of these funds are stored in the form of European, American and British government bonds in European depositories.

According to the sources, despite the fact that negotiations between russia and the United States are at a very early stage, moscow is considering the possibility of using a significant part of the frozen reserves for Ukraine reconstruction as part of a potential peace agreement.

Last year, the World Bank estimated that rebuilding Ukraine would cost USD 486 billion.

Reuters notes that the idea of using frozen assets of the Central Bank of russia to rebuild Ukraine has not been voiced before. This may indicate potential concessions by russia as moscow and Washington seek ways to end the war.

As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, on January 6, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called on international partners to accelerate the creation of a legal framework that would allow the seizure of frozen assets of the Central Bank of russia to help Ukraine.

Recall that on January 11, Bloomberg reported that the administration of U.S. President Joe Biden supports a bill on the seizure of frozen assets of the russian federation for their subsequent transfer to Ukraine.

Bloomberg also reported, citing sources, that the authorities of the terrorist country of russia have begun preparations for the West to confiscate the Central Bank's reserves, which were frozen by sanctions after the start of a full-scale war in Ukraine.
