Russian drones become the most common cause of civilian deaths in Ukraine - UN

Drones have become one of the most important weapons in the war of the aggressor country of russia against Ukraine and the most common cause of civilian deaths.

This is stated in a report by the United Nations (UN), Reuters reported.

The UN stressed that the use of drones has increased significantly during the three years of russia's war with Ukraine. The aggressor uses short-range unmanned aerial vehicles most often to kill civilians in Ukraine in January, the UN monitoring mission reported. The UN mission said that at least 139 civilians were killed and 738 injured in January 2025, with 27% of deaths and 30% of injuries caused by short-range drones.

"Our data shows a clear and disturbing pattern of the use of short-range drones in a way that puts civilians at serious risk. Onboard (drone) cameras should allow operators to distinguish between civilians and military targets with a higher degree of certainty, but civilians continue to die in alarming numbers," said the head of the UN monitoring mission, Daniel Bell, in a press release.

The aggressor country, russia, continues to deny deliberately targeting Ukrainian civilians with its drones, although it was as a result of its full-scale invasion of Ukraine that thousands of people have been killed from drones, the UN stressed.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, the United Nations has officially recorded the deaths of more than 12,300 people in Ukraine as a result of russian aggression since February 2022, as well as more than 27,800 wounded.
