Scholz calls Trump's offer to help Ukraine in exchange for rare earth metals selfish

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz condemned US President Donald Trump's offer to tie further defense aid to Ukraine to the rights to access its valuable raw materials.

This is reported by N-tv.

Thus, Scholz said after the informal EU summit in Brussels that it would be "very selfish, very egocentric" to use the country's resources to finance defense support.

"It's about Ukraine being able to finance its reconstruction. These are the main tasks, given the enormous destruction. Therefore, the country's resources must be used to finance everything that is needed after the war," the publication quotes the German Chancellor as saying.

Recall that US President Donald Trump wants to conclude an agreement with Kyiv on the supply of Ukrainian rare earth minerals to the US. In exchange, Ukraine will be provided with military assistance.

Meanwhile, a source in the President's Office told the media that a clause on minerals was added specifically for the United States to the strategic Victory Plan that President Volodymyr Zelenskyy presented to the Verkhovna Rada.
