Trump announces talks with Ukraine and russia

US President Donald Trump said that his administration plans to hold "meetings and talks" with representatives of Ukraine, russia and "various parties", CNN reports.

"We are doing business with Ukraine and russia, we have meetings and talks scheduled with various parties, including Ukraine and russia," Trump said during an event at Andrews Air Force Base.

The White House has not yet provided additional details about the announced talks.

Trump's statement came after Dmytro Lytvyn, an adviser to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, called for a "more in-depth approach" from Kyiv's allies. This was a reaction to recent comments by the Trump administration calling for new elections in Ukraine in parallel with a plan for a potential ceasefire with russia.

Earlier, the newly appointed US envoy to Ukraine, Keith Kellogg, in an interview with Reuters, stressed the need to hold postponed presidential and parliamentary elections in Ukraine.

"Most democracies hold elections during wartime. I think it's important. That's the beauty of a strong democracy - when there's more than one potential candidate," Kellogg said.

Zelenskyy's adviser Dmytro Lytvyn said it was difficult to "fully assess" Kellogg's views, but warned that "if his plan is just a ceasefire and elections, it's a failed plan."

It's worth noting that back in December 2024, Keith Kellogg publicly stated that Ukraine and russia were ready for talks.
