The Romanian Air Force lifted two F-16 fighter jets due to russian drones approaching their border during the russian attack on Ukraine.
This was reported by the Romanian Ministry of National Defense.
"Russian forces resumed a series of drone strikes on civilian and port infrastructure facilities in Ukraine on the morning of January 30, near the border with Romania, in Tulcea county. The monitoring and surveillance systems of the Ministry of National Defense (Romania) recorded the appearance of certain drones in the airspace of Ukraine, the flight paths of which were approaching the border with Romania,” the message says.
"As a result of this situation, two Romanian Air Force F-16 aircraft, which are performing combat duty on airspace patrol, took off from the 86th air base in Borcea at around 3:40 a.m. The planes returned to base at around five o'clock," the Romanian Ministry of Defense said.
At the same time, the population in Tulcea County was alerted, an RO-Alert message was sent at 03:30 a.m., and at 04:50 a.m. the termination of alert measures in the area was announced.
"According to data recorded by the Romanian Air Force radar, no penetrations of controlled air targets into national airspace were recorded. The (Romanian) Ministry of National Defense forces will conduct surveys in areas where risks may arise from these situations today and will continue their airspace monitoring missions," the statement said.
Allied structures, as indicated, are also informed in real time about the situations caused by the attacks.
"The (Romanian) Ministry of National Defense strongly condemns these attacks by the russian federation on individual objects and elements of Ukrainian civilian infrastructure, which are unjustified and seriously violate the norms of international law," the statement said.
As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, a russian drone hit a high-rise building in Sumy, children were injured.
