Syria's new government demands russia extradite fugitive dictator Bashar al-Assad - media

The new government of Syria has demanded that the aggressor country of russia extradite former Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad, who fled the country in December 2024 and is now in Moscow.

The Israeli publication The Times of Israel reported this, citing its own sources.

The day before, it became known that a russian delegation headed by Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov visited Damascus.

The publication's interlocutors said that during the negotiations, the de facto head of Syria, Ahmed al-Sharaa, asked Bogdanov for russia to extradite former dictator Assad.

According to the publication, the press secretary of the russian dictator, Dmitry Peskov, refused to comment on whether this demand was made during the negotiations.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, on December 8, 2024, a number of media outlets wrote that Bashar Assad had decided to leave Damascus amid the successful offensive of Syrian opposition groups.

As Reuters reported at the time, Assad and his family boarded a plane and flew in an unknown direction.

Later, media outlets reported that Assad's plane allegedly crashed over the part of Syria where russian army bases are located.

However, the Defense Intelligence of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine reported that the plane's "catastrophe" turned out to be a russian information operation, under the cover of which they took Assad to Moscow.

Already on December 9, Moscow announced that the decision to grant political asylum to Assad was made by russian dictator vladimir putin.
