France offers Denmark to station troops in Greenland, but Copenhagen refuses to discuss this idea

French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot said that Paris is considering sending troops to Greenland. This comes amid U.S. President Donald Trump's statements about the desire to establish American control over the island.

According to Politico, the Head of the French Foreign Ministry said this in an interview with Sud Radio.

According to him, France began discussing the deployment of its troops in Greenland with the Danish government the day before. At the same time, the Minister emphasized that Copenhagen refused to continue discussing this idea.

Barrot also reported that yesterday, January 27, during a meeting of foreign ministers of the European Union, his colleagues expressed "very strong support" for Denmark.

He added that the European foreign ministers also told their Danish counterpart that they were ready to consider sending troops if necessary.

Barrot stressed that he did not believe that the United States really intends to invade Greenland.

The words of the French Foreign Minister came against the backdrop of repeated statements by U.S. President Donald Trump and members of his team about the intention to establish control over Greenland.

Earlier, Trump said that he did not rule out the use of the army or economic coercion to take the island from Denmark.

As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, on January 10, Greenlandic Prime Minister Múte Bourup Egede said that the island's population does not want to be with either the United States or Denmark.

At the same time, a few days later Egede said that Greenland seeks to strengthen ties with the United States in the defense and mining sectors.

Recall that earlier, Danish MEP Anders Vistisen cursed Trump for his desire to establish control over Greenland.
