The aggressor country russia did indeed plan to assassinate the CEO of the German concern Rheinmetall, Armin Papperger. He was to become one of the links in the chain of assassinations that moscow was preparing against the heads of European defense enterprises.
NATO Deputy Assistant Secretary-General for Innovation, Hybrid, and Cyber James Appathurai stated this at a meeting of the European Parliament's committee on hybrid warfare, his words are quoted by Politico.
According to him, over the past two years NATO has observed numerous cases of sabotage. These include train derailments, arson attacks, attacks on the property of politicians and plots to assassinate industry leaders. Appathurai added that this was an assassination attempt on the head of Rheinmetall Papperger.
The NATO Deputy Assistant Secretary General said that russia recruits saboteurs on the Internet, using "criminal gangs or unwitting youth or migrants."
"They are generally crudely done, but they are done with a purpose, which is to create disquiet to undermine support for Ukraine," Appathurai said.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, in July 2024, the American television channel CNN wrote, citing sources, that the U.S. and German intelligence services prevented the assassination of Rheinmetall Director Armin Papperger.
Recall that in the summer of 2024, American military bases in Europe were put on high alert due to the threat of sabotage from russia.
In May, the British newspaper Financial Times reported, citing representatives of the intelligence services of several countries, that russia is preparing to carry out sabotage throughout Europe in order to undermine support for Ukraine.
