An underwater fiber optic cable of the Latvian State Radio and Television Centre (LVRTC) state joint-stock company was damaged in the Baltic Sea. The damage is likely due to external influences.
This was reported by the Delfi newspaper on Sunday, January 26.
The Lithuanian National Armed Forces have sent a patrol ship to inspect the vessel that may be involved in the incident. Prime Minister Evika Siliņa has convened a meeting of responsible ministries and services.
"Siliņa stressed that the damage was most likely caused by external influences and could be very significant, adding that the Navy has also joined the investigation and examined the potential scene of the incident. The LVRTC also suggested that external damage is possible," the report said.
The Lithuanian Armed Forces have informed NATO allies about the incident and exchanged information. Latvian President Edgars Rinkēvičs expects the results of the investigation as soon as possible and close coordination with allies regarding the causes of the cable break.
As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, on December 25, it became known that the Estlink 2 submarine power cable connecting Finland and Estonia had broken in the Baltic Sea.
In November, the only fiber-optic cable connecting Finland with the countries of Central Europe was broken in the Baltic Sea.
On December 27, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said that the North Atlantic Alliance would strengthen its military presence in the Baltic Sea amid recent incidents with broken communication cables.
