NATO to boost military presence in Baltic Sea after undersea cable sabotage

The North Atlantic Alliance (NATO) will boost its military presence in the Baltic Sea following recent incidents involving the sabotage of undersea communications cables.

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte announced this on X on December 27.

Rutte wrote that he had spoken with Finnish President Alexander Stubb, during which they discussed the investigation into the sabotage of undersea cables.

Rutte expressed his full solidarity and support to Stubb and promised that the Alliance would boost its military presence in the Baltic Sea.

As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, on December 25 it became known that the Estlink 2 submarine power cable connecting Finland and Estonia broke in the Baltic Sea.

Later it became known that on December 25 three communication cables connecting the countries along the bottom of the Baltic Sea also broke.

Recall that on December 26, Finnish police detained the Eagle S vessel, which may have been involved in the Estlink 2 cable break. It turned out that it belongs to russia's "shadow fleet", created to circumvent sanctions.
