European Commission develops plan to completely stop russian gas imports

The European Commission is developing a plan to completely eliminate all russian fossil fuels from the EU market, but despite the EU's efforts, gas supplies to Europe continue, and Brussels wants to put an end to this.

European Commission spokeswoman Anna-Kaisa Itkonen stated this, enkorr reports with reference to Interfax, Ekonomichna Pravda reported.

"Regarding the plan or roadmap for the European Union to completely abandon Russian fossil fuels, this is ongoing. This was announced as something that the Energy Commission will present in the first 100 days (of its mandate), so we still have a few days before that deadline," Itkonen said at a press briefing in Brussels on January 20.

Itkonen said that the EU has already taken significant steps "to get rid of any Russian fossil fuels," and "overall, we have significantly reduced Russian gas imports."

“We have cut all Russian coal imports, most of Russian oil imports and over two-thirds of Russian gas,” Itkonen noted.

“Despite these significant results, Russian gas is still present on the EU market. And this is something we would not like to see, and this is certainly one of the issues that will be addressed in this roadmap, which will be presented in the coming weeks,” she added.

As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, on January 1, 2025 at 7 a.m. Kyiv time, the Agreement on Interaction between LLC GTS Operator of Ukraine and PJSC Gazprom for Physical Connection Points of the Russian Federation-Ukraine between the gas transportation systems of Ukraine and the Russian Federation of December 30, 2019, expired.
