The Treaty on Friendship and Cooperation between Ukraine and Albania has entered into force, Albania opens an embassy in Ukraine on January 17.
This is indicated in a statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ukrainian News agency reports.
In particular, it is reported that on January 17, during the Ukraine-Southeast Europe ministerial meeting in Kyiv, the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Andrii Sybiha and Albania Igli Hasani held an official ceremony of exchanging the instruments of ratification of the Treaty on Friendship and Cooperation between Ukraine and the Republic of Albania.
After the ceremony of exchanging the instruments of ratification, the treaty officially entered into force.
The document was signed on February 28, 2024 in Tirana (Albania) by the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy and the Prime Minister of Albania Edi Rama within the framework of the Ukraine-Southeast Europe Summit. In July 2024, the Albanian side completed the internal procedures for ratification of the agreement, and in November 2024 it was ratified by the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine.
It is noted that the purpose of the agreement is to consolidate the basic framework of relations between the two states based on mutual respect and trust, compliance with the norms of international law and commitment to democratic principles.
Sybiha called the conclusion of the Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation a historic event in bilateral relations. He also announced that the Albanian Embassy in Ukraine would be opened today.
The document will be valid for ten years and will be automatically extended for further five-year periods if neither party declares its desire to terminate it.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, on February 28, 2024, Zelenskyy signed a treaty of friendship and cooperation in Albania. At the time, Zelenskyy noted that this document would contribute to the development of cooperation and strengthening of Ukraine's positions in the Balkan region.
