Ukraine and UK agree on 100-year partnership

Ukraine and the United Kingdom have agreed on a 100-year partnership. The relevant text of the agreement, signed by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Prime Minister of the United Kingdom Keir Starmer, is posted on the President's website, the Ukrainian News agency reports.

In particular, the parties agreed to strengthen defense capabilities.

"The parties will deepen defense cooperation, strengthen their military and defense-industrial capabilities, including the development of the armed forces and cooperation between defense-industrial bases, strengthen Ukraine's defense procurement systems and transfer technologies for joint production of defense products (including within the framework of joint initiatives), paying special attention to innovation and strengthening the protection of intellectual property rights for transferred technologies, and also align them with NATO requirements," the agreement states.

The parties also agreed to strengthen security and reach a consensus on Ukraine's membership in NATO.

"The parties will develop areas whose importance for Euro-Atlantic peace and stability goes far beyond war, recognizing Ukraine's important role in protecting Euro-Atlantic security and paying special attention to Ukraine's interoperability and contribution as a future NATO ally," the document says.

In addition, the parties agreed to build a partnership in the field of maritime security.

"The parties will make efforts to eliminate long-term systemic threats and challenges to maritime security in order to restore freedom of navigation. The parties establish a partnership in the field of maritime security, in particular to strengthen security in the Baltic, Black and Azov Seas," the agreement says.

The parties also agreed to strengthen economic and trade cooperation and enhance cooperation in the fields of energy, climate and the transition to clean energy, to strengthen cooperation in the field of justice and accountability, to counter foreign information manipulation and interference, to strengthen positions as leaders in the field of science, technology and innovation, and to cooperate on migration issues.

The agreement provides that it will enter into force on the date of receipt by the parties of the last notification of the completion of their internal procedures necessary for its entry into force.

"This Agreement will remain in force for 100 (one hundred) years, starting from the date of its entry into force, unless either Party terminates it," the document states.

As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, British Prime Minister Starmer arrived in Kyiv on January 16 to sign the agreement on a 100-year partnership.
