British Prime Minister Starmer arrives in Kyiv to sign 100-year partnership agreement

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has arrived in Kyiv to sign the 100-year partnership agreement.

Starmer announced this on X, the Ukrainian News agency reports.

"Peace through strength. I’m in Kyiv with a simple message to the people of Ukraine: Our 100 Year Partnership is a promise that we are with you, not just today or tomorrow, but for a hundred years – long after this war is over and Ukraine is free and thriving once again," he said.

The UK government website reports that a historic 100-year partnership agreement will be signed during Starmer's visit to Ukraine.

In particular, the agreement will promote military cooperation in maritime security through a new structure to strengthen security in the Baltic, Black and Azov seas and deter ongoing Russian aggression.

A new UK-developed grain inspection scheme to track stolen grain from occupied Ukrainian territories will also be launched.

The agreement will also cement the UK’s partnership for Ukraine’s energy sector, critical minerals strategy and clean steel production.

Starmer will also announce GBP 40 million for a new programme to restore Ukraine’s economy. This comes on top of GBP 12.8 billion in UK support already allocated, including GBP 7.8 billion in military aid.

This is Starmer’s first visit to Ukraine since taking office as Prime Minister on July 5, 2024.

As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, on January 13, Ukrainian Defence Minister Rustem Umerov announced that the UK would finance the production of air and missile defence systems for Ukraine, and that London would also provide funds for the production of long-range weapons for the Ukrainian army.

On January 10, Bloomberg reported that British Prime Minister Keir Starmer plans to visit Ukraine in the coming weeks to discuss the possibility of deploying international peacekeeping forces there after the end of russian aggression.
