Israel and Hamas agree to peace deal, release of hostages – CNN

The Israeli government and Hamas have reached an agreement to end hostilities in Gaza and gradually release hostages and Palestinian prisoners, CNN reported, citing an informed source.

Hamas and allied militant groups are expected to release 33 hostages captured in Israel during attacks on October 7, 2023. At the same time, Israel is to release hundreds of Palestinian prisoners.

"The agreement will be the first reprieve from war for the people of Gaza in more than a year and only the second since the start of the Israeli bombardment. Once the agreement is confirmed, Palestinian civilians are expected to be able to return to the northern part of Gaza, and a massive influx of humanitarian aid will be sent to the strip, where residents have long faced dire humanitarian conditions," the report said.

However, Hamas representatives urged citizens not to move before the official start of the ceasefire, and to obtain information about the terms of the ceasefire from official sources.

As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, on May 31, U.S. President Joe Biden called on the leadership of the Islamist Hamas movement to agree to Israel's proposal for a ceasefire and release the hostages.

On June 1, German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock proposed sending an international protection force to the Gaza Strip.

In December, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said that the Israeli army was behind the assassination of the head of the political bureau of the Islamist organization Hamas, Ismail Ghani.
