Frederiksen speaks with Trump about status of Greenland

Denmark's Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen had a telephone conversation with U.S. President-elect Donald Trump. Among other things, the politicians talked about the island of Greenland, which Trump had previously repeatedly stated that he would buy.

According to the Yevropeiiska Pravda (European Truth) publication, the Frederiksen's office reported this on January 15.

The office's press service said that Frederiksen and Trump discussed bilateral relations between Denmark and the United States. They also raised the issue of the status of Greenland.

It is emphasized that Frederiksen reminded Trump of the statement of Greenland's Prime Minister Múte Egede. The day before, he said that the island does not want to be with either Denmark or the United States.

"The Prime Minister emphasized that the decision on independence should be made by Greenland itself," Frederiksen's office added.

As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, on January 11, Denmark sent a letter to Trump's team, in which it stated its readiness to discuss strengthening Greenland's security. Copenhagen also agrees to increase the U.S. military presence on the island.

Earlier, the head of the Greenlandic government, Múte Egede, stated that the island's residents do not see themselves as part of either Denmark or the U.S.

At the same time, he emphasized that the island wants to strengthen defense and mining ties with Washington.
