There was enough evidence against US President-elect Donald Trump in the 2020 election interference case to convict him, but Trump was re-elected President, so the cases were dismissed.
This is stated in the report of special prosecutor Jackie Smith, who led the case of Trump's interference in the 2020 election, WP reports.
In the US, presidents cannot be prosecuted for crimes committed, so the election saved Trump.
The published report claims that Trump pressured the leaders of "swinging states" and urged them to ignore the vote count.
For example, when it became clear that Trump had lost in Arizona, he and his lawyer tried to convince the then Speaker of the Arizona House of Representatives, Rusty Bowers, to help. Trump's team blackmailed the speaker with false claims of fraud to replace Arizona voters with Trump supporters.
In early January 2021, a few days before Congress certified the election results, Trump called Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger and begged him to "find 11,780 votes" - it was this gap that brought Biden victory.
In addition, there is another report that Trump illegally kept secret documents, but it has not yet been made public.
Recall that three cases have been filed against the US President-elect:
- about a conspiracy to overturn the election results and Trump's role in the storming of the Capitol,
- about his storage of secret documents
- about his alleged attempt to change the results of the presidential election in the state of Georgia in 2020.
Donald Trump won the presidential election on November 5, so the court did not issue verdicts in these cases.
