Germany to form territorial defense division to protect military and infrastructure facilities

A brigade-level unit will be formed within the German Armed Forces (Bundeswehr) to protect military and infrastructure facilities on the territory of the country.

Tagesschau reported this with reference to the DPA agency.

The German army is currently undergoing restructuring. In 2024, the country's Defense Minister Boris Pistorius instructed to form a new structure within the Bundeswehr.

Previously, territorial defense was the task of the Bundeswehr reserve. Regiments and companies are subordinate to regional commands, and the reservists themselves, as a rule, come from the regions to which they are assigned.

From April 1, 2025, territorial defense will be directly subordinate to the Land Forces, which currently consist of two tank divisions and a rapid reaction force division.

The formation of the territorial defense division is scheduled for spring, and the conscription of servicemen will begin in mid-March.

Parts of this division will be engaged in the protection of ports, bridges, highways, railway facilities, as well as military and digital infrastructure facilities.

As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, in November 2024, the head of the Federal Intelligence Service of Germany, Bruno Kohl, stated that the aggressor country russia may attack one of the NATO members in the coming years.

Recall that in October 2024, a new NATO headquarters began operating in Germany, the tasks of which include monitoring russia's actions in the Baltic Sea.

Earlier, the Kiel Institute for World Economy stated that Germany needs to spend several decades to equal the power of its army with the russian one.
