The naval headquarters of the North Atlantic Alliance (NATO) has started work in the city of Rostock in the north of Germany. It will monitor the situation in the Baltic Region around the clock.
According to Deutsche Welle, the headquarters was opened by German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius on October 21.
Delivering a speech at the opening ceremony of the headquarters, Pistorius emphasized that the countries of the Baltic Region are very close to russia, which is trying to destabilize the situation "with its continuous aggression."
Pistorius expressed confidence that the new naval headquarters will play one of the most important roles in protecting the alliance's interests in the region from russian aggression.
He reminded that russian aggression, as a rule, manifests itself in the form of hybrid and cyber attacks.
"Such attacks are designed to blur the line between war and peace. They aim to destabilize European security, undermine trust and increase influence <...> We must make sure that putin does not pass. We must protect ourselves and do everything to support our partners on NATO's eastern flank," Pistorius said.
The headquarters will be headed by an admiral from Germany. His deputy will be an officer from Poland.
The Naval Headquarters will inform the NATO leadership about the situation in the region around the clock.
As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, in September of this year, it became known that the Armed Forces of Estonia and Finland are developing a plan to block the Baltic Sea for russian ships and vessels in the event of an "extreme situation".
We also wrote that due to russian aggression, Sweden was forced to increase its military presence on the strategically important island of Gotland in the Baltic Sea.
