Zelenskyy responds to Trump's statement about russia's "fears"

There is no need to draw hasty conclusions about the United States' policy regarding security guarantees for Ukraine and the possibility of the country's accession to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated this during a meeting with Finnish Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen. His words were quoted by Barron's with reference to the Associated Press and Ukrinform on Wednesday, January 8.

Zelenskyy commented on the statement of U.S. President-elect Donald Trump that Ukraine's possible membership in NATO has always been part of "Russia's great concern." The head of state advised not to draw hasty conclusions about U.S. policy.

"Do you remember, Ukraine was told that Patriot systems can and are only in NATO countries? Either we have been in NATO for a long time, or we should not draw hasty conclusions. This is what happened to us with Patriot, and with missile systems, and with other NATO-style weapons," Zelenskyy said.

According to him, Ukraine "has the right to demand serious, solid security guarantees" to convince millions of Ukrainians to return from abroad, which he will discuss with Trump and current U.S. President Joe Biden. Zelenskyy said that it is necessary to obtain security guarantees that could stop russian dictator putin. According to the Ukrainian President, one of the reasons for russian aggression is that Ukraine is not a member of NATO and does not have specific security guarantees.

As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that negotiations on ending the war between the aggressor country russia and Ukraine should begin with U.S. President Donald Trump and European leaders, and only then with russian president vladimir putin.

On December 9, Trump confirmed that he had spoken with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy about the possibility of ending the war.

Recall, on November 15, Zelenskyy said that under Trump, the war in Ukraine would end faster.
