A bipartisan group of U.S. congressmen, who work closely with the Embassy of Ukraine in the United States, has submitted a resolution to the House of Representatives of Congress that defines russia's actions in Ukraine as an act of genocide.
The Ambassador of Ukraine to the United States, Oksana Markarova, reported this on Facebook.
This initiative is the first legislative document regarding Ukraine submitted to the new 119th Congress. The preamble of the bill emphasizes that the crimes of russian troops, including the forcible transfer of Ukrainians, including children, to russia and the occupied territories, comply with the provisions of Article II of the UN Convention on the Prevention of Genocide.
The operative part of the document states that russia is condemned for acts of genocide, and the U.S. is called on to cooperate with NATO and the EU to support Ukraine in order to prevent further crimes. The resolution also supports the establishment of tribunals and international investigations to hold russian leaders and military personnel accountable.
Ukrainian Ambassador to the U.S. Oksana Markarova said: "Thank you to the congressmen for introducing this important resolution! All crimes of the Russian Federation must be reflected in American legislation to ensure the punishment of Russian criminals and prevent such terrible crimes in the future."
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly recognized russia's actions as genocide of Ukrainians.
