Russian Gazprom transferred about USD 6.2 billion to Ukrainian NJSC Naftogaz of Ukraine for russian gas transit services through Ukraine under a 5-year transit contract in 2020-2024.
The ExPro publication has announced this, the Ukrainian News agency reports.
It is noted that Naftogaz paid about USD 5.4 billion to the GTS Operator of Ukraine for organizing transit.
If calculated in hryvnias, Ukraine received about UAH 195 billion from russia during the contract period. Russia paid the most in 2020, over USD 1.7 billion, which is due to larger volumes of booked capacities.
In total, over 5 years of transit, Ukraine transported about 148 billion cubic meters of russian gas to European countries.
As a result of the occupation of the Luhansk Region, Ukraine temporarily lost access to the Sokhranovka gas metering station, one of two entry points to the Ukrainian GTS through which russian gas entered the system.
Russia refused to transfer transit volumes to another point - Sudzha, and also reduced the transit fee.
In this regard, NJSC Naftogaz of Ukraine appealed to international arbitration.
Initially, Naftogaz demanded USD 150 million in unpaid fees for reserved capacities in court.
Already in early 2024, Naftogaz increased the amount of claims to USD 843 million in a statement of claim, and also reiterated that "due to Gazprom's ongoing violation of the provisions of the Agreement, the Company reserves the right to increase the claims until the end of the case and, accordingly, the termination of the Agreement in January 2025."
At the end of September 2024, Gazprom's receivables for natural gas transportation services amounted to UAH 41.9 billion or over USD 1 billion.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, on January 1, 2025 at 7 a.m. Kyiv time, the Agreement on Interaction between LLC GTS Operator of Ukraine and PJSC Gazprom for Physical Connection Points of the russian federation-Ukraine between the gas transportation systems of Ukraine and the russian federation dated December 30, 2019, expired.
