Chinese heavyweight Zhang Zhilei may become the next contender for the world champion titles held by Ukrainian boxer Oleksandr Usyk.
This was stated by the co-manager of the Chinese boxer Terry Lane, Sky Sports writes.
According to him, Zhilei should first fight Agit Kabayel for the interim WBC title on February 22. In case of victory, the Chinese boxer can claim a duel with the holder of the full WBC championship belt, which currently belongs to Usyk along with the WBO and WBA titles.
"If Zhilei defeats Kabayel, he will once again prove that he is capable of defeating boxers from the top 10, and will consolidate his status as the second best heavyweight on the planet after Usyk. Without a doubt, this should earn him the right to a championship fight," Lane emphasized.
Recall that Zhang Zhilei returned to the elite division after an impressive knockout victory over former WBC champion Deontay Wilder in June last year.
Oleksandr Usyk last defended his titles in a fight against Tyson Fury, winning by unanimous decision. The Ukrainian champion has not yet announced his future plans.
