The transitional government of Syria, which replaced the fallen regime of Bashar al-Assad, has called on russia to reconsider its presence in the country. This concerns several russian army bases on Syrian territory.
According to Euronews, this was stated by the press secretary of the transitional government, Obeida Arnaut.
"I think that russia should reconsider its presence on Syrian territory, as well as its interests," Arnaut said.
He stressed that the Kremlin's actions in Syria were related to the regime of fugitive President Assad.
"They can reconsider their views and take initiatives against the new administration to show that they have no enmity with the Syrian people," Arnaut added.
According to him, russia's recent actions in Syria have been ambiguous. The russian decision to withdraw the fleet and relocate military equipment does not give a clear idea of Moscow's true goals.
Russia has two military bases in Syria - in the city of Tartus and near the city of Latakia. The naval base in Tartus is especially important for russia, which allowed Moscow to conduct operations in the Mediterranean Sea.
The Khmeimim air base, where russian aviation is based, is located near Latakia.
As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, on December 14, the russian portal "Important Stories" wrote that the russians had begun evacuating their troops from Syria. This is allegedly evidenced by satellite images.
Earlier, Bloomberg reported, citing sources, that russia is negotiating with the new Syrian authorities to maintain a military presence in the country.
