Ukrainians must make fundamental decisions – continue fighting or negotiate – Blinken

Ukrainians must make fundamental decisions on whether to continue fighting with russia or negotiate a ceasefire.

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken stated this at a briefing on Thursday, December 19.

Blinken noted that he wants to make sure that Ukrainians and the future administration of U.S. President-elect Donald Trump receive the strongest foundation for 2025. According to him, a ceasefire on fair and lasting terms would be a victory for Ukraine, but there must be guarantees that russia will not use it to rearm and attack.

"The Ukrainians have to make fundamental decisions about carrying on the fight or looking to negotiate and try to bring this to a ceasefire.  The fundamental question is whether Russia is prepared to do that and to do that in good faith," Blinken said.

He stressed that the U.S. wants to give Ukraine the best negotiating position, which means enough money, ammunition and the number of mobilized people to continue the fight. Blinken said that russia should feel maximum pressure and losses from continued aggression.

As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, on December 9, Trump confirmed that he had spoken with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy about the possibility of ending the war.

On December 18, the future U.S. special envoy for Ukraine and the aggressor country russia, Keith Kellogg, said that the Ukrainian and russian sides are ready for negotiations.

On December 19, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz had a telephone conversation with U.S. President-elect Donald Trump, in particular regarding russian aggression against Ukraine.
