US announces USD 988 million arms package for Ukraine. What will it include?

The United States has announced a new USD 988 million military aid package for Ukraine. It includes additional equipment, drones and missiles.

The U.S. Department of Defense has reported this was on its website.

The Pentagon noted that the money for this aid package was allocated from the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative (USAI). Within the framework of this program, more than USD 2 billion remain that can be directed to Ukraine. The new aid package includes:

  • Ammunition for High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS);
  • Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS);
  • Equipment, components, and spare parts to maintain, repair, and overhaul artillery systems, tanks, and armored vehicles.

The current President has often used the presidential order on reducing funds, which allows him to transfer surplus goods and services from U.S. stocks without the approval of Congress.

As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, U.S. National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan denied information that the Biden Administration is open to returning nuclear weapons to Ukraine, saying that "it is not under consideration."

Meanwhile, The Wall Street Journal, citing U.S. and Congressional officials, stated that the Biden Administration doesn’t have enough time left to use the billions of dollars that lawmakers have allocated to arm Ukraine.
