Trump's defense secretary nominee promises to quit drinking if confirmed

Pete Hegseth, President Donald Trump's pick for defense secretary, has vowed to quit drinking if elected, ABC News reported.

Hegseth denied allegations of abuse against women and claims that he was kicked out of two veterans' organizations for drinking problems. He promised senators that he had quit drinking and would not drink again.

"Senator Roger Wicker, the incoming chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, who will vote to confirm Hegseth's nomination to the full Senate, confirmed that Hegseth has pledged to abstain from drinking if confirmed," the report said.

Republican Senator Kevin Cramer of North Dakota said he was "inspired" by Hegseth's promise in their private meeting to abstain from alcohol as defense secretary.

"He said, 'My commitment is to not touch alcohol while I'm in this position,'" said Cramer, who lost his son to alcohol addiction in 2018, the publication writes.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, billionaire Elon Musk has spent more than USD 250 million on Donald Trump's presidential campaign in recent months.

On December 3, newly elected US President Donald Trump joked during a meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau last Friday that Canada should become the 51st state of the United States.

Recall, Trump said that his first foreign visit after winning the election would be to France.
