Zelenskyy provides Border Service with part of lands of Chornobyl Radiation and Ecological Biosphere Reserve for construction of fortifications

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy provided the State Border Guard Service with part of the lands of the Chornobyl Radiation and Ecological Biosphere Reserve for the construction and arrangement of fortifications and fences.

This is stated in decree No. 835 of December 5, Ukrainian News Agency reports.

In particular, Zelenskyy withdrew from the Chornobyl Reserve land plots 45 meters wide along the state border of Ukraine with a total area of ​​695.2 hectares and provided them for permanent use to military units of the State Border Guard Service for the construction, arrangement and maintenance of engineering and technical and fortification structures, fences, border signs, border clearings, and communications.

The total area of ​​the territory of the Chornobyl Radiation and Ecological Biosphere Reserve is determined at 226,269.5 hectares.

The Cabinet of Ministers is instructed to ensure the implementation of the decree within 6 months.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, in February 2022, russian occupation troops from the territory of Belarus entered the Chornobyl NPP zone, but in early April 2022, russia withdrew its troops from Chornobyl to Belarus. The mayor of the satellite city of the Rivne NPP Varash, Oleksandr Menzul, reported that not a single russian serviceman who dug in and was in the Red Forest near Chornobyl survived.

In September 2022, the Cabinet of Ministers transferred 226,965 hectares of land to the Chornobyl Radiation and Ecological Biosphere Reserve (Kyiv Region) for permanent use. The Verkhovna Rada provided for the possibility of creating a radiation and ecological biosphere reserve in the Chornobyl Exclusion Zone in July 2016.
