In South Korea, President facing impeachment. Defense minister already resigned

The opposition parties in South Korea have filed a petition to impeach President Yoon Suk Yeol after he declared martial law.

This is reported by Yonhap News.

The deputies are collecting signatures for the impeachment petition. If they succeed, then within 72 hours of the notification, the South Korean parliament must vote to start the impeachment procedure. This requires a two-thirds majority in the 300-seat National Assembly. To overcome this threshold, it will be necessary to involve not only opposition deputies, but also deputies from the pro-government party.

Korean political scientists suggest that the actions of President Yoon Suk Yeol will lead him to deeper political isolation.

Meanwhile, South Korean Defense Minister Kim Yong Hyun resigned in connection with the introduction of martial law. He claims that the declaration of martial law was his idea.

"As the Minister of National Defense, I feel full responsibility and apologize for causing confusion and concern to the public... I take responsibility for the situation related to martial law and expressed my gratitude to the President," the minister said.

As a reminder, South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol declared martial law in the country and accused the opposition of "anti-state activities aimed at preparing an uprising."

He later reversed this decision.
