South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol said he would lift his martial law decree after parliament voted to block it. Yoon's cabinet approved the decision to lift martial law shortly after.
This was reported by CNN.
The South Korean President said he would lift his martial law decree once he received the necessary level of support from his Cabinet of Ministers. He added that due to the time in South Korea, he had not yet been able to convene his full Cabinet to support the lifting of the decree. His statement was made shortly before 5 a.m. local time (GMT+9).
Yoon also said he had withdrawn troops deployed to enforce the martial law order after the National Assembly voted 190-0 to block the decree.
It is indicated that in his statement he again criticized the opposition party for disrupting his government's steps, doubling down on the initial justification for the decree - previously Yoon referred to the opposition's demands for the impeachment of government officials, suggesting that they equated to the actions of pro-North, anti-state forces.
The Cabinet of South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol voted to lift martial law shortly after he announced his intention to revoke this measure.
As a reminder, on December 3, South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol suddenly declared martial law in the country and accused the opposition of "anti-state activities aimed at preparing an uprising."
As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, the Administration of US President Joe Biden was not informed in advance about martial law in South Korea and is "seriously concerned about what is happening." President Biden himself has declined to comment for now, as he is only "receiving information about this."
