Slovakia agrees on gas from Azerbaijan in case Ukrainian transit stops - Reuters

Slovak company SPP has signed a short-term pilot contract for the purchase of natural gas with Azerbaijan's SOCAR, preparing for the possible termination of gas supplies of the aggressor country of russia through Ukraine.

It was reported by the Reuters agency on Wednesday, November 13.

"Due to the high risk of stopping gas supplies via the eastern pipeline, we are taking measures to guarantee safe gas supplies to our customers, from large industrial customers to households, in any situation," SPP CEO Vojtech Ferencz said.

The tentative agreement provides for delivery already in December. A knowledgeable source said that small volumes of Azerbaijani gas will be transported through the Trans-Balkan pipeline in Bulgaria. Reuters notes that SPP was a leading company trying to maintain gas transit through Ukraine while diversifying its supplies. The agreement between moscow and kyiv on the export of russian gas through Ukraine to Europe expires at the end of the year, which forces SPP and other countries of the European Union to look for alternative sources, the agency reminds.

As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, on September 30, the adviser to the head of the Office of the President, Mykhailo Podoliak, stated that Ukraine will fulfill its obligations regarding the transit of russian oil to Europe in full until the contracts expire, that is, until the end of 2029.

At the same time, on October 7, Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal once again officially confirmed that Ukraine will not extend the gas transit agreement with russia's Gazprom, which expires on December 31, 2024.
