In winter, blackouts of up to 20 hours a day may begin in Ukraine, in case of a cold winter and an attack on nuclear power plants.
This was reported by Politico.
Every winter during the war in Ukraine has reportedly been difficult, but the next season will come after months of russian airstrikes on energy infrastructure.
At the end of August, the russian federation carried out more than 200 missile and drone strikes on energy facilities, completing a campaign that reduced the production capacity of electricity in Ukraine by more than 9 GW, said Hennadii Riabtsev, chief researcher of the National Institute of Strategic Studies of Ukraine and energy expert. This led to the loss of 8 power plants and more than 800 heat supply facilities.
The "most realistic scenario" that Ukraine will face this winter, according to Riabtsev, includes limiting "power supply to industry and households for 8-14 hours a day."
Oleksandr Kharchenko, head of the Energy Research Center and adviser to the Ukrainian government on energy issues, said that in the worst case, under conditions of severe cooling and attacks on the nuclear power system, Ukraine could face power outages of up to 20 hours a day.
As Politico reports, this means the absence of heat in homes, the shutdown of factories important for defense and the outflow of Ukrainians who will seek refuge abroad.
This assessment is supported by Ukraine's international partners, while the country turns to them with a request for help.
As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, Ukraine will strengthen the protection of substations that are key to the operation of nuclear power plants (NPP).
In addition, Ukraine agreed with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to extend the agency's monitoring mission to key substations on which the stable operation of nuclear power plants depends.
It will be recalled that the mass attack of the russians on August 26 led to the shutdown of four nuclear units.
