Yuzhnoukrainsk renamed Pivdennoukrainsk, not Hard

The Verkhovna Rada has renamed Yuzhnoukrainsk in the Mykolaiv Region to Pivdennoukrainsk.

Member of Parliament from the Holos faction, Yaroslav Zhelezniak, announced this on his Telegram channel, the Ukrainian News agency reports.

A total of 275 parliamentarians voted for bill No. 11236 as a whole, with the minimum required 226.

The explanatory note states that a public survey was conducted in the respective city regarding the new name of the city through a questionnaire among the city's residents.

According to the survey results, the name Pivdennoukrainsk received the most support.

Before adopting the draft resolution on renaming Yuzhnoukrainsk in the Mykolaiv Region to Pivdennoukrainsk, the Rada also considered the resolution on renaming the corresponding settlement to Hard, but it was not supported in the session hall.

As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, in September the Verkhovna Rada renamed more than 300 settlements whose names contain symbols of russian imperial policy or do not meet the standards of the state language.
