On September 12, the Mission of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) made its first visit to an electrical substation in Ukraine, which is important for nuclear safety.
This is stated in the IAEA report, the Ukrainian News agency informs.
"The IAEA visited an electrical substation in Ukraine for the first time as part of its work on assessing the condition of the electrical grid infrastructure, which is of great importance for nuclear safety," the report says.
During the visit to the Kyiv substation, the IAEA team saw the damage that had been caused earlier, but noted that the substation is again operating at full capacity after repairs.
The Agency emphasized that reliable access to off-site power supply is one of the seven principles for ensuring nuclear safety and security during armed conflict, outlined by IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi two and a half years ago.
"Assessing the state of substations is an important new element of our work in Ukraine, since the safety of NPP operation depends on a stable connection to the grid. In recent weeks and months, the situation in this regard has become increasingly unstable. As experts in the field of nuclear safety and related infrastructure, it is important for us get first-hand information on the condition of the substations," Grossi said.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, Ukraine agreed with the International Atomic Energy Agency to extend the Agency's Monitoring Mission to key substations, which depend on the stable operation of nuclear power plants.
