The Naftogaz of Ukraine national joint-stock company has started purchasing natural gas in the European Union.
The press service of the company informed Forbes Ukraine about this, the Ukrainian News agency reports.
"The first supplies of natural gas to Ukraine from the EU will take place in September 2024. The purchased natural gas will be registered in a customs warehouse, while it will be pumped into underground storage facilities in Ukraine. Although the natural gas will be paid for, Naftogaz will not pay VAT for it until the time of customs clearance," the NJSC reported.
At the same time, the company notes that it is not about the import of natural gas, but about the purchase of natural gas at the bank's expense, which will be stored in the "customs warehouse" mode and will be used only in case of emergency situations and only for business needs.
"This will allow Naftogaz to stock up on natural gas that can be quickly cleared through customs and used in case of emergency. Natural gas can be stored in a customs warehouse for up to three years. The entire reserve stock will be purchased at the expense of EBRD loan funds – EUR 200 million," Naftogaz noted.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, in March Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal announced that Ukraine survived the winter due to its own natural gas production, and this result was achieved not only due to increased production, but also due to a decrease in natural gas consumption by industry.
Naftogaz plans to accumulate 13 billion cubic meters of natural gas in underground natural gas storage facilities before the heating season of 2024/2025.
