The invasion of the Ukrainian military in the Kursk Oblast of the aggressor country of russia, which has been going on for the third day, was a surprise for the russian military. This is the first time since the Second World War when the army of another country entered the territory of the russian federation.
This was reported by the Bloomberg agency on Thursday, August 8.
The events in the Kursk Oblast caused "obvious embarrassment" for the russian president, while pro-Kremlin military bloggers accused top officials of "staggering incompetence." The situation at the border demonstrated the fragility of russian defense and undermined the Kremlin's carefully constructed image of putin as a "protector of ordinary russians," the agency notes.
"The invasion of 1,000 Ukrainian troops into the Kursk Oblast, which has been going on for the third day, has taken the russian military by surprise. This is the first time since the Second World War that another country's army has invaded russia. Yesterday, a grim-faced putin summoned his army and intelligence chiefs for an explanation," the article says.
This breakthrough into enemy territory strengthens Ukraine's argument that the United States and its European allies should not fear the Kremlin's threats of escalation and that Kyiv should be allowed to fight putin in any way it can to hasten the end of the war, Bloomberg writes.
The fighting in the Kursk Oblast could be an attempt to use the captured territory as a potential bargaining chip in future negotiations with Moscow, as well as measures to ease pressure on Ukraine's defense by drawing russian troops away from the front line.
As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, on the morning of August 6, the authorities of the Kursk Oblast claimed that "saboteurs" tried to break through the russian border at night, but they were allegedly repelled.
On August 6, the Ministry of Defense of the russian federation announced the transfer of additional reserves to the border.
Already in the evening of August 6, the Ministry of Defense of the aggressor country of russia edited its message, removing from it a reference to the alleged retreat of the Armed Forces of Ukraine from the Kursk Oblast.
