Energy Commission head Tarasiuk does not believe in construction of 1 GW of gas generation in 2024

Valerii Tarasiuk, head of the National Commission for State Regulation of Energy and Public Utilities (Energy Commission), believes that Ukraine will hardly have time to build 1 GW of new generation by the end of 2024.

He said this in an interview with Forbes Ukraine, Ukrainian News Agency reports.

"My personal opinion is that it is unlikely that there will be 1 GW, but the trend is positive - many investors are building small power plants," Tarasiuk said.

According to him, in order to speed up this process, the Energy Commission has simplified the terms and cost of connection for new power plants.

"We are ready to support each project individually if there are difficulties both on the part of regional power distribution companies and Ukrenergo. The construction of distributed gas generation is a controlled process, so there should not be more generation than the system can accept. Gas generation is usually connected when it is necessary to cover consumption peaks. During these hours, the cost of electricity is the most expensive, but the average weighted by day, month, year should be acceptable," Tarasiuk said.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, in June, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced plans to build 1 GW of flexible gas generation in 2024 and another 4 GW in the coming years.
