Zelenskyy instructs Shmyhal to consider petition on ban on raising electricity prices

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy instructed Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal to consider a petition on the ban on raising electricity prices.

This is stated in Zelenskyy's response to the petition on the ban on raising electricity prices in wartime, which received the necessary 25,000 votes for consideration, Ukrainian News Agency reports.

"The issue of price regulation on the retail electricity market is important and sensitive for our citizens, especially under the current conditions of martial law. I am sure that it should be resolved by maintaining a balance between the need to mobilize all possible resources for the security of energy supply and proper social protection of our low-income citizens," says the response to the petition.

Zelenskyy noted that according to the laws of Ukraine, it is the government that ensures the implementation of state price policy and social protection of citizens.

He also emphasized that the government is implementing a program of housing subsidies to help socially vulnerable categories of the population pay for housing and utility services, after the increase in electricity prices for household consumers from June 1, the Pension Fund will automatically transfer the amount of subsidies to citizens.

"In view of the social significance of the raised issue, I turned to the Prime Minister of Ukraine with a proposal to consider the petition, paying special attention to the observance of the constitutional rights and freedoms of citizens, and to decide on appropriate response measures," Zelenskyy said.

He also announced that he additionally proposed to speed up the implementation of measures to create a new decentralized electricity generation, establish regular information of the population about the state of affairs in the fuel and energy complex of Ukraine, use of funds for its restoration, including at the expense of international aid, and take all possible measures, aimed at saving energy resources by consumers, in particular the population, businesses, budget institutions, housing and communal enterprises.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, the Cabinet of Ministers has increased the electricity tariff for the population by 63.6% from UAH 2.64 to UAH 4.32 per kWh from June. The new tariff will be valid from June 1, 2024 to April 30, 2025.
